It’s worth a trip to the corner of Queen Street West and Dovercourt Road in trend-setting Queen West.
In the spirit of this neighbourhood, known for its unique expression of creativity, new urban art murals now adorn the construction hoarding of Ten93 Queen Street West Condominiums by Pemberton Group. This public art installation was developed as a collaboration between Pemberton and Wallnoize, whose passionate artist, teacher and project manager Angel Carrillo (aka Cruz1) has been responsible for iconic art that has enhanced the urban art scene around Toronto – notably the Pan Am Game art project that covered graffiti in the GO Bloor-Perth underpass.
The massive Ten93 Queen West installation was completed in just three days. The work was undertaken by established collectives and up-and-coming independent graffiti artists such as Blaze, Vinser, CTR, Vista, Flips and Dudeman, who were joined by well-recognized members of the GH crew — Johny, Done, Cawt, Sonz, Sizeo, Looter, Knowr and Werc — who worked side-by-side with Carrillo. The outcome is a series of distinctive panels that wrap two sides of the construction site. To unify the artwork along the Queen Street face, a single colour palette was employed, an unusual move in the graffiti art world.
In another bold move, the customary placement of the graffiti was reversed. Stylized words usually found in a back alley were placed along Queen Street, while vibrant imagery was created in the east-west laneway at the back of the site to make it more inviting for the many pedestrians who already use it.
Pedestrians and members of the local community have been taking selfies with the art as the backdrop, and by sharing photos through social networks.
“We wanted to embrace the artists’ work and give them a blank canvas so they could fully showcase their talent, and Queen West was the perfect neighbourhood to do just that,” said Alexandra Muzzo, Pemberton sales and marketing manager.
Encompassing 134 suites, Ten93 Queen West will rise to a striking nine storeys offering inspired amenities and high quality features and finishes, and will add ground level retail to the neighbourhood. TTC will be at the doorstep, and the Gardiner Expressway is nearby. Available suites begin from the $290,000s.
