Trend Watch: It Takes Two - Apr2016

It’s a boy! It’s a girl! Wait, it’s a pair of pastels that made it to the Pantone 2016 finish line. Heads definitely turned when the colour authority announced its first-time decision ever to pick two colours to define 2016.

It is a leap year so I guess anything is possible. Even still, we can’t help but ask: why the duality? Seeing this anticipated selection acts as both a global reflection and antidote— and these are certainly uncertain times in the world—Pantone says that Rose Quartz and Serenity represent “a mindset of tranquility and inner peace.” And we can all agree in our hurried and stress-filled lives, this is a highly necessary and sought-after state.

Together these two shades also serve to blur the gender lines as society moves toward gender equality, (thanks Caitlyn). I see this pastel duo as a desire to return to a state of innocence, to quiet down the loudness of the world, cut the discord and re-emerge with a more compassionate and peaceful approach. Here’s how you can bring the serenity of a blue sky and the gentleness of rose quartz to your world in 2016.
